One of the most crucial substances for your body is vitamin D, which keeps your bones from becoming fragile and breaking. Yes, we are still reviewing cars, but we're getting there. Because getting enough sun is one of the simplest ways to increase your vitamin D intake. Its nickname, "the sunshine vitamin," is not a misnomer. At least, that's the justification you should offer when looking to buy a convertible.
A lot of convertibles are currently available on the market, ranging from budget-friendly models like the Mazda MX-5 Miata to mid-range boulevard cruisers like the Audi A5 Cabriolet, Mercedes E-Class Convertible, and the BMW 430i xDrive Convertible.
The new 4 Series Convertible, which is bigger, wider, and higher than the outgoing model, has also lost weight by doing away with the hard-top roof in favour of a fabric soft-top that is 40% lighter. Although the silhouette loses some aesthetic appeal, modern fabric roofs are so well-made and insulated that there aren't many drawbacks. The soft top reduces weight, expands the trunk, adds headroom, and significantly lowers the centre of gravity of the vehicle, all of which improve performance.
The result is a sleek and appealing shape, helped along by the long hood, minimalistic lines, and frameless windows. The chrome that envelops the front grill does it no favours, emphasising its flaws and making it look like a gangster beaver with all of those shiny fillings. However, a convertible's lack of a B-pillar means that rolling down both the front and rear windows creates a wide moon-shaped opening, which is a cool substitute for open-air cruising in light rain or bright sunlight.
The front end cannot be seen from inside, which is a plus. With leather accents and high-end switchgear, the cabin is tastefully furnished. BMW interiors are always well-made and well-finished. Although the low and relaxed seating position is great, we've had this complaint about pretty much every modern BMW we've driven: the steering wheel can't be lowered low enough to find the sweet spot angle.
The 430i Convertible's size increase results in excellent wind buffeting, which prevents turbulence from pounding your ears and enables quiet conversations even at highway speeds. When the roof is up, sound deadening is impressive as well. An interesting side note is that the roof can be electrically raised and lowered at up to 50 km/h, and it takes about 18 seconds to complete the mechanical dance.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder powering the 430i xDrive Convertible generates 255 horsepower and 294 lb-ft of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. The vehicle is driven by an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and all-wheel drive provides all-weather traction and maximum grip.
The 430i is all you really need in a sun-kissed cruiser if you aren't drawn in by the gravity of performance driving. The four-cylinder engine prefers a slow to moderate pace, making it ideal for light duty and casual driving. The boost ramps up with whistles from its wastegate, which are audible when the roof is down, and the 430i does not feel sluggish when asked to pick up the pace.
The more expensive M440i Convertible is undoubtedly more alluring because of its more powerful engine, which accelerates it from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.3 seconds less time. However, the 430i is the more composed sibling because it builds up propulsion more gradually and delivers it more linearly while moving at a slower speed. In other words, try out the 430i first, and if that's enough, don't even take the M440i's keys. Power can ruin you. There is also the FOMO phenomenon. We estimate that the 430i is more than adequate for 80% of drivers.
We don't think the 430i needs adaptive or adjustable dampers, and it already has fixed dampers. It handles potholed roads with grace and is surprisingly less complainant than a BMW Z4. We really don't see many reasons to spend more money on a coupe as opposed to a sedan when you consider the somewhat usable rear seats and generous trunk space.
The BMW 430i Convertible offers a focused and relaxed ride with a thick layer of daily usability and everyday comfort, as opposed to a driving experience that is encouraging and engaging. Despite its gangster beaver teeth, this droptop BMW is beautifully made and fuel-efficient, making it difficult not to suggest one to those lacking in vitamin D.
